Background by tuffix Background by tuffix

Inspired by a conversation with a friend about her everyday struggles as a “teacher with immigration background”. Loved this reaction of hers.

"Immigration background" in it's semantic meaning has a nice flavour of "pluralism", however, in it's common connotation it's a term (in Germany basically reserved for descendents of "guest workers", you don't use it for descendents of British migrants for example) that clearly labels you as "foreign". The problem is that you can never get rid of being "different", through the "background" you will always be constructed as the "other", therefore never be able to finally "arrive" in the society you lived your whole life.
And in my case (been born in Tunisia by a German mother) it's even trickier.

the thing that bugs me most is that well for example if the US which started as colonies and grew to become a nation where the populous was composed of people from literally EVERYWHERE, has yet to realize that really when you get down to it anyone can come from anywhere and still adopt or be just as much a part of a nationality as YOU can, then there really is no hope yet for most other nations in the world sadly :(

i do like your continued use of illustration to poke fun at the racist concepts that are or at least should be GLARINGLY apparent.

What a petty way to divide a society. Actually sleuthing a difference out of long past history, just for differences sake.
